Mark Motta, of the New Jersey Burlington County Regional Recycling Program, was checking the truck hydraulics, just before he and his partner would leave on their rounds.

But behind the compactor's crusher, he saw two little eyes staring at him.

Startled, Mark looked closely and found a tiny gray and white trembling kitten, covered in oil, and stuck where she would be crushed.

Mark asked his partner Moses White to turn off the engine, as Mark climbed into the bin and freed the frightened kitten.

Mark cleaned the kitten off with his safety shirt, and then called safety officer Samantha Stamile, who told him to put the kitten in a box and bring it to her office.

"I got there, and there's this sweet little kitten, absolutely saturated in some kind of oil from inside the truck," Samantha told The Washington Post.

"She also had a green eye discharge, and she was wheezing."

Samantha and Mark rushed the kitten to the fleet mechanic shop, and repeatedly bathed her in Dawn dish washing soap to remove the oil.

Mark named her Squishy, for what almost happened to her.

Samantha fed Squishy cat food and then took her to All Creatures Veterinary Care Center, where she was examined, and given antibiotics for a respiratory infection.

She then took Squishy to the Rise Again Animal Rescue to find a good home for her.

There, Squishy immediately found a good home. Samantha's home!

Samantha happily agreed to foster her and brought her home to her two daughters, Arabella, 7 and Adelyn, 2, and their cat Rascal.

Squishy was likely a feral stray, but ... "She's an absolute cuddle bug," said Samantha.
