A beautiful bond between a 96-year-old woman and her canine companion.
Barbara Collins (October 21, 1929 - June 29, 2026) of Winston Salem, North Carolina lived a very loving life, with her daughter and her family, next door to her granddaughter and her family.
Barbara was deeply involved with people who loved her, a crucial connection for persons of any age but especially important to very senior citizens, many of whom suffer from loneliness.
Today's story is about best buddies Barbara and Chewy [Chewbacca], a 150-pound, 4-year-old Newfoundland dog, and how they planted flowers together. But it is about much more than that.

Standing in her garden, Chewy by her side, Barbara would gesture with her cane at a particular spot, saying, "And dig," as Chewy dug a hole with his paws.
Barbara would empty a small container of marigolds in the hole, patting the soil down with her hands.
Once the backyard garden was completed, Barbara would rub the giant dog's head. "You did a good job, Chewy," she would say to her granddaughter's dog.
This heartwarming scene was filmed by Barbara's granddaughter, Amy Savino, who often filmed the unlikely pair working together.
"They were just best friends," Amy, 39, told The Washington Post. "He always had such a sweet, sweet bond with her."
Amy posted a video of the pair on social media, and it quickly gained over 11 million views and thousands of comments.
"She was a priority," Amy told The Post about her grandmother. "If I didn't come over here, she would come to my house," a house that includes Amy's husband and three children.
Barbara credited her long life to staying active, but the best part of her day was sharing time with her family, including Chewy.
She would say, "He's my baby dog. I love him very much, I'm a lucky person."
