In early February, as Chicago temperatures plunged to life-threatening lows near minus 25, Candice, a real estate broker knew she had to do something to help the homeless.

What she did was stunning.

Using her credit card, Candice rented 30-rooms for them at the Amber Inn. And then did even more.

Awaiting the homeless was food, fresh clothing, comfortable beds and hot baths and showers.

On Instagram, Candice asked others to help her move these homeless people from their tent city into the Amber Inn.

Volunteers quickly arrived to help, as donations also flooded in on her Cash App account.

Among the homeless, Candice greeted two-pregnant women, and a family of five.

“We had to accommodate everyone,” she told The New York Times. “They were so appreciative. They couldn’t wait to get in a bath and lay in a bed.”

In addition to food and clothing, Candice bought toiletries, prenatal vitamins and lotions, and restaurants donated food.

“People from the community, they all piggyback off Candice," said Robyn Smith, the Amber Inn manager.

“Other people started calling and anonymously paying for rooms,” added Robyn, who lowered the room rent to make it more affordable.

Soon, 30-rooms became 60 and as donations poured in, what began as two nights, became five.

“I am a regular person,” said Candice. “It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little black girl from the South Side.”

“I thought it was unattainable, but after seeing this and seeing people from all around the world, that just tells me that it’s not that unattainable. We can all do this together.”
