Dave Carlson: A garbage worker who rescued a puppy from being crushed.
In Columbus, Ohio, just before dumping an apartment building dumpster into his truck, Dave "saw a face looking back at me."

It was a frightened puppy, a pit bull mix with a brown-and-white face, his head poking up just above the garbage pile.
If Dave hadn't spotted the little guy, with a roar, that truck would have hoisted the dumpster and emptied it into its bed of garbage. The puppy would have been killed.
Instead, Dave called his supervisor, Logan Sieg who climbed into the dumpster.
"I lured him in with some crackers and eventually picked him up," Logan told pet publication Daily Paws.

They took him to their station where they gave him water and more crackers, and after about 10-minutes, the puppy began to recover.
Someone had tossed him into the dumpster and the puppy was too small to get out by himself.
"It's just cruel and inhumane," Logan said.
This puppy, estimated to be 6-months-old, was picked up by the Franklin County Dog Shelter and soon they found a good home for him.
He is now named Riley, and the Dog Shelter reported on Facebook he is doing "great."
Riley is a great example of people caring for someone in need and everyone opening their hearts to help him.
