Hello Dick,
So glad that you found us and that you are considering sharing our story with others. The students and I would be so pleased if you did. Of course, our project was important for the 25 individuals who received the sacks, and it also benefitted my 3rd and 4th grade students at our Title 1 School, most of whom never before saw themselves as the ones who could be the catalysts to help others in such a big way. But, most importantly, the class wanted our story to spread so other students in other schools and communities would be inspired to complete similar projects.
Each recipient received three sacks: one filled with outdoor survival items, another with food items, and the final with toiletries. These were distributed by the Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness (http://c3hsantabarbara.org/). The students in my class live in the neighborhood very close to our school which is about a half mile from the main thoroughfare in the area. On that street, there are many homeless community members. These are the folks my students wanted to help, the people they see nearly every day as they walk the neighborhood, but I also wanted to ensure their safety and anonymity, so we collaborated with the Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness. They told the recipients what day the sacks would be delivered and found out where each person would be at what time in order to give them the items.
Let me know if you decide that you want to tell our story and what more you might need from me. Thanks for your time and consideration!
