A little penguin who traveled 5,000 miles each year to visit his rescuer.
Dear Reader, in researching this story, some of the facts vary and I believe our fisherman tells tall tales. That said, it is still a great story.
Joao Pereira de Souza is a fisherman who lives on a small Brazilian island. One day as he began to fish, he discovered an oil spill had polluted the water.
Disgusted, he headed home.
Later that day, while walking in the sand, Joao saw a little penguin smothered in oil, struggling to survive.
(Story continues from "Read More")
His heart broken by such a sad sight; Joao brought the penguin to his home.
Naming this fragile little guy Dindim, Joao washed him, and fed him as he nursed Dindim back to health.
Dindim is in a penguin species that lives on the South American coast and returns to Patagonia at the southern tip of South America, 2500 miles away, to breed.
When Dindim was strong enough, Joao released him into the sea, thinking he would never see Dindim again.
But the following June, Dindim returned. After a loving nose-to-beak reunion, Joao took Dindim to his home, as an honored guest.
Dindim waddled around with Joao for a time and then swam away. 11 months later, in a 5,000-mile round trip, he returned again as they renewed their beautiful friendship.
And each year, for the next several years, this loving bond continued. And then Dindim no longer returned. No-one knows why.
But I am a romantic and maybe one day Dindim will return and bring his family to meet Joao, for that would be the happiest of all endings.
