1955 was an eventful year:

Polio, the scourge of the world, became preventable with Dr. Jonas Salk's new vaccine.
Rosa Parks, a black woman, was arrested after refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person, sharply elevating the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.
Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California, revolutionizing amusement parks.
Rock 'n' Roll became dominant, led by Elvis Presley and other new rock stars.

Also, in 1955, two 12-year-old girls began to write to each other, Patsy Gregory from Hoghton in Lancashire, England and Carol-Ann Krause in Conway, South Carolina.

Recently, the two 80-year-old pen pals joyfully fulfilled their "lifelong wish," when Patsy travelled nearly 4,000 miles so they could meet in person.

Patsy told the BBC, "I recognised her immediately and it just felt natural." Though they had never met, their lives were remarkably similar. Said Patsy:

"We're both the same age [and] got married around the same time."
"[We] both had three children and we've gone through life, all the trials and tribulations, and shared it."
"Its absolutely lovely and we're both still here."

"We started in pencil, moved on to ink, then typing and now we can email and stay in touch on social media."

This once in a lifetime trip was organized by Steph Calam, Patsy's daughter, who joined her.

"Mum has always wanted to meet her American penfriend," Steph told the BBC. "It was very emotional when they met. I was quite choked up when they hugged for the first time."

Patsy and Carol-Ann will continue writing to each other. But will they ever meet again?

At 80-years-of-age, not likely, but the memories from this joyous trip will last the two of them for the rest of their lives.
