When the prescription was a kitten.

Robin Sipe, 67 of Virginia, is a retired purchasing agent, and is suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which makes it hard to breathe.

"I've had to be intubated and put into a medically induced coma," she told The Washington Post. "Dr. [Earl] King [her pulmonologist] pulled me out of death each time."

In September, when Robin, a cat lover, arrived for an examination, she cried when Dr. King came into the examining room.

She told him her rescue kitty of many years; Datura had suddenly died.

She had been crying for weeks, she explained to Dr. King, and despite having an adult daughter, she was suffering from loneliness and despair.

When the medical appointment ended Dr. King proscribed some medications for Robin, but at the top of the prescription, he wrote, "Get a cat."

He told The Post, "Robin was down in the dumps, crying about the loss of her cat, and I felt that a new cat was the best remedy for her."

After saying goodbye to Dr. King, on her way home she stopped at a vegetable stand, and while she was there noticed a tiny black and white kitten frolicking around her.

It turned out she was one of five kittens, each of which needed a home. But this little kitten was missing part of her front left paw, from an accident shortly after her birth.

She immediately captured Robin's heart, and for the price of one cent, she became Robin's.

Robin named her Earlene after Dr. King, and the two are now inseparable. Together, they watch TV, and Earlene snuggles next to Robin in bed.

"I do believe this was meant to happen with all my heart," said Robin.
