Left to die, small dog is rescued from trash truck, finds loving home.

On April 15, Milwaukee garbage collector Nazir Nalls was dumping a can into his truck when by accident, the can fell from the truck onto the street.

Amid the garbage was a tiny dog, just skin and bones.

"You could see his entire skeleton," Nazir told The Washington Post. "It was like he hadn't eaten in days or maybe weeks."

Nazir and his partner gave this frail little dog a bowl of water, and called their supervisor, Alex Halverson, who hurried to the scene.

"He was extremely malnourished and close to death," Alex told the Post. "My guess is that he probably wasn't going to see the next day."

Alex fed the little dog what would have been his lunch, two peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. "He just inhaled them."

Despite everything he had endured, this tiny dog charmed everyone. And instead of mistrusting people, he eagerly welcomed belly rubs and loving pats.

Alex called him PJ [short for Peanut Butter & Jelly] and took him to Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control for extensive medical care.

PJ received comprehensive care, including treatment for malnutrition and deworming. The staff prepared a cozy kennel with fresh blankets for him.

A short time later, a far healthier PJ was placed with a foster family, where he continued to gain weight, enough weight to be neutered and become eligible for adoption.

Meanwhile, Alex told the shelter he wanted to adopt PJ. On May 6, PJ was given to Alex, as PJ found his forever loving home.

Said Alex, "He is the friendliest dog I've ever been around, and he always has to be near you."
