Geneivieve Moss of Chesterfield, England felt isolated and alone, and with her profound hearing loss, lived in a world of silence.

But during the covid pandemic, in April of 2021, while reading her newspaper, something special caught her attention.

"I saw a photo of a tiny black and white ball of fluff, and I fell in love with him then and there," she told The Washington Post in an email interview.

A family was seeking a home for the last kitten in their cat's litter. Genievieve contacted them and they brought this tiny fur baby to her home.

"He jumped from their arms straight into mine, Genievieve told The Post, "And I knew that he had chosen me."

Because his colors were similar to those of a zebra, she named him Zebby.

Zebby began sleeping alongside her, and if he heard any noise, or if the security lights went on, he would awaken her.

As time passed, if there was a knock on the door, or the phone rang, he would touch Genievieve with his paw, or walk in front of her, to let her know.

Then, Zebby began getting her mail.

"He heard the rattle of the letterbox being opened, and he stretched up on his back legs and pulled the letter from the flap as a hand posted it through."

And for a little more icing on this heartwarming cake, he learned to fetch Genievieve's slippers.

In 2023, Zebby was named Britain's National Cat of the Year, by Cats Protection, the nation's biggest feline welfare charity.

As for Genievieve, "he has helped break the loneliness and has made my house a home," adding "Zebby always makes me laugh."
